In a guest opinion in today’s Oregonian, four Oregon professors wrap up a series of recent studies on the effects of climate change into one message: We can’t afford not to act.
That’s why OLCV is working hard to pass a comprehensive climate change package, which includes a number of bills that would encourage energy efficiency and the development of renewable energy sources here in Oregon, as well as SB 80, known as the cap-and-trade bill. Together, these measures will not only help to mitigate effects and the costs of global warming, but they will also give Oregon a much needed boost to the economy and create good jobs for Oregon families. In fact, a draft report from ECONorthwest in January estimated that cap and trade alone would create at least 43,000 jobs here in Oregon.
With abundant studies emerging now at the state, national and international levels, and with federal momentum to cap greenhouse-gas emissions, address domestic energy issues and grow green jobs, the Oregon legislature has the opportunity right now to take the lead. In doing so, Oregon will stay ahead of the curve, and will be poised to provide the services that will be in high demand when federal legislation finally comes around.
Oregon can’t afford to wait.
Tell your legislators to support Oregon’s Healthy Climate Package. Tell them we need a cap on global warming pollution. Tell them we can’t afford to do nothing.

I support it all the way!
