Fun with Maps -- Marine Reserves

As Oregon looks to create a system of marine reserves and marine protected areas, some fishermen are speaking out. Last Tuesday's Oregonian had this article about a group of Port Orford fishermen eager to create their own to increase the numbers of fish.

Our Ocean, a broad coalition of groups, is calling for a comprehensive network of protected areas. Susan Allen, the coalition director, said "the (human) population is only going to increase, and more pressure is going to be put on the near shore." The Ocean Policy Advisory Committee is meeting October 7th to discuss a process for evaluating the proposals.

Check out the maps of all the public's proposed reserves and protected areas.
